French 'knighthood' for Apichatpong   Thai indie filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul received the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from French Ambassador to Thailand Laurent Bili on behalf of the French government. The "Chevalier" (knight) medal is the third-tier honor in the Arts et Lettres, following the "Commandeur" and "Officier". Up to 200 people receive the Chevalier honor each year, with Apichatpong joining the ranks of such filmmakers as Michael Haneke, Hayao Miyazaki, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford and Michael Cimino, who have also received Arts et Lettres medals. Apichatpong has long been celebrated in France, having won the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival for Blissfully Yours, a jury prize at Cannes in 2004 for Tropical Malady and this year he served on the jury at Cannes.
